And when I did sleep for short periods of time, I would have dreams of Jeff Dahmer in them. KUKRAL: I didn't sleep for about two weeks, which has never ever happened to me before or since. UNIDENTIFIED MAN #2: We have also in addition through our investigation determined that the suspect may well have been involved in at least 17 homicides.īARNETT: A newspaper story caught Mike Kukral's attention. UNIDENTIFIED MAN #1: There are 11 individuals parts thereof that were recovered. And she called me at home and said, this guy you went to school with has killed all these people in Milwaukee and apparently ate some of them. And my wife was at that time a reporter for the Akron paper. His research began in earnest in the summer of 1991.īACKDERF: I was at home. And how screwed up is that?īARNETT: Backderf also learned that Dahmer started drinking at the age of 14. So really he was imitating his mom at school. And she would have seizures where she would shake and twitch until she exhausted herself essentially. And when Backderf went back to do research, he learned that Joyce Dahmer suffered from depression and was addicted to pills.īACKDERF: Later I found out that his mom was also suffering from nervous episodes at home. MIKE KUKRAL: You just look at him and think either, man, that kid's weird or he's funny or, what's up with him? You just didn't know.īARNETT: But back home, Dahmer's parents fought often. John Backderf was a member, so was Mike Kukral role. ![]() All of this led to the formation of the Dahmer fan club. UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS: (As character) Who did that?īARNETT: Dahmer also pretended to have epileptic fits in the school hallways. ROSS LYNCH: (As Jeffrey Dahmer, imitating sheep) And suddenly, the door would creak open and he'd suddenly bleat out like a sheep and then slam the door and run away.īARNETT: Some of that is captured in Backderf's 2012 graphic novel, "My Friend Dahmer," and in the new film. And he just didn't look comfortable in the world.īARNETT: Backderf says Dahmer started to attract a small following for his subversive antics.īACKDERF: You know, you'd be sitting in the library. He had this kind of odd halting way of talking. Sketches that Backderf started drawing in 1975, when he and Dahmer were both students at Revere High School in suburban Akron.īACKDERF: He was - blond hair. BARNETT, BYLINE: Cartoonist John Backderf flips through sketches of Jeffrey Dahmer.īACKDERF: Now, this is actually the genesis of the book.īARNETT. JOHN BACKDERF: I just have hundreds of these things.ĭAVID C. Barnett of member station WCPN ideastream in Cleveland tells us more. And after the killings, he took it upon himself to learn more about Dahmer's background. As the title suggests, he actually did know Dahmer in high school in Ohio. While the movie "My Friend Dahmer" opens this weekend, it's a fictional retelling of Dahmer's high-school years based on the international bestseller, a graphic novel of the same name by John Backderf. Remember the serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer? Between 19, he murdered 17 people in grotesque ways. There's a new movie out this weekend, and it's a biopic with an interesting backstory of its own. Overall, these are compelling characters and the movie works well. Here's that second story we promised you. ![]() Dahmer is one note whereas Derf has a revelation in the end which may work better if he's the protagonist. He is after all the Me in My Friend Dahmer. The movie may be better centering on Derf. Music is always good to pump up the movie and helps to set the time period. It's a bit too quiet except for the prom. My first random complaint is that this needs more period music. As Dahmer's home life deteriorates, he becomes more and more disturbed. Derf uses Dahmer as a prop in his pranks. He is befriended by Derf (Alex Wolff) and his friends who proclaim themselves as the Dahmer fan club. ![]() After his father takes away his work shed and his roadkill specimens, he starts acting out at school. ![]() He likes to pick up roadkills and uses acids to strip away the meat. Now it is up to Dan and the other Battle Brawlers to find the Infinity Core and reunite it with the Silent Core to restore balance. The “Infinity Core” and “the Silent Core” are interfering with one another and starting to run wild. Vestroia erupted in pandemonium the negative power overwhelming the minds and wills of the Bakugan who live there.Īs Vestroia begun to collapse, the human world is also affected. The negative energy exploded and the Infinity Core fell to earth. However, the negative energy proved too much for Naga to handle. Naga eventually succeeded in his goal of reaching the silent core and began to absorb its negative energy. While in Vestroia, Hal G encountered the Bakugan Naga, and the two made a deal - Hal G would give Naga the human world in exchange for his control over Vestroia! While trying to return to earth, he was pulled in by the evil energy of the Silent Core and became the villain known as “Hal G”. During testing of the machine, an explosion sucked him in and led him to Vestroia where he discovered the two energy cores. ![]() Meanwhile, back on Earth a scientist named Michael had been working on a dimension transportation device. His name was Naga and his mission was to penetrate the silent core and seize its power. However, there was one rogue Bakugan who lusted for control, and schemed to seize all of the power for himself. Throughout history, these two opposing forces had maintained the balance of equilibrium in Vestroia. At the very centre of this universe there are two opposing energy cores THE INFINITY CORE, the source of all positive energy and… THE SILENT CORE, the source of all negative energy. ![]() Vestroia is a vast dimension comprised of 6 attribute worlds: Fire, Earth, Light, Darkness, Water and Wind. They named the monsters “Bakugans” and their elite team the “Bakugan Battle Brawlers”. Kids from all over the world played with the cards, yet 6 kids stood out: Dan, Marucho, Runo, Shun, Julie and Alice. Kids created a popular battle game not knowing that these cards actually corresponded to an alternate world called Vestroia. The cards featured different characters, different environments, and different powers. One day, cards began to fall from the sky and were picked up by kids all over the world. One unique aspect of the game is that the characters have individual binks (small short videos) by which they communicate with the player, asking for goods or help if allied with them or, if they are the players' enemy, taunting them when attacking or expressing worry when under siege. The game contains several different characters that all appear as AI-controlled lords in the Skirmish mode, available to be selected as allies or enemies. The design of these mirrors the original 50 levels with the difficulty rising as the player progresses through the levels. There are 30 additional levels added by the developers in the form of an additional Crusade Trail. There is an option of three chickens at the start of the game which the player can use to skip a particular level. In each level, the player must defend the kingdom and defeat one or more Kings. Along with that there are 50 levels designed with increasing difficulty. There are historical chapters (mostly fictionalized) which are to be completed using the resources given to the player at the start of the missions. There are two ways to build an army either make the weapons and then spend a little gold to turn peasants into soldiers, or turn them directly into soldiers using more gold via the mercenary post. These resources are deposited on the stockpile and the player can choose to either sell or use them for defence purposes. Other than farms there are other resources such as iron ore, quarry (for stone), and marshes (for oil). ![]() The colour of the player's units have also been changed from blue to red in order to match the colours of the Knights Templar. The game adds new AI opponents (the number depending on the version of the game) and several new Arabian units purchasable from a mercenary post. As a consequence, farms can only be built on oasis grass, which leads to rivalry among players for limited farmland and resources. The gameplay is similar to the original Stronghold, the major difference being that the game is set in the Middle East. Stronghold Warchest adds one more Crusader Trail, consisting of 30 linked missions. The game also features the Crusader Trail, a series of 50 linked missions against various opponents. Each campaign comprises several battles, such as Nicaea, Heraclea, the siege of Antioch, Krak des Chevaliers, and the Siege of Jerusalem. These document the First, Second, and Third Crusade, as well as conflicts within the individual Crusader states. Stronghold Crusader features several real-time strategy campaign strings. This changed when an updated version of Stronghold Crusader, Stronghold: Crusader Extreme was released in early 2008. ![]() ![]() USA or Poland), meaning players in the rest of the world have never encountered the second Crusader Trail, or second set of characters. Stronghold Warchest was only released in a limited number of countries (e.g. This version was a compendium of Stronghold and an enhanced version of Stronghold: Crusader, containing additional characters and an additional Crusader Trail. The game was also released as Stronghold Warchest. Another prominent addition not found in its predecessor is a skirmish mode in single-player, allowing customized battles with AI opponents instead of the linear campaign. Crusader has much in common with the original Stronghold, but differs from its predecessor in the fact that the game is no longer set in England, instead being set in the Middle East during the Crusades. ![]() Stronghold: Crusader is the successor to Firefly Studios's 2001 real-time strategy video game Stronghold. Some of CTR's systems have likewise aged brilliantly the basic mechanic of power sliding to build up a bonus boost is present in pretty much every kart racer going, but in CTR the system is an absolute stand-out. I recently reviewed Sonic Team Racing, another colourful and thoroughly enjoyable kart racer, but the style of that game is generally nowhere near as distinctive as the designs here. All of that translates beautifully to a modern high-definition environment - these deliberately over-blown character designs pop in high definition in a really striking way. Things had to be big and stand-out to pop on that hardware. The designs of the characters of Crash were so over-the-top in part because of the limitations of the PS1 hardware. ![]() Instead, every visual element you see has been rebuilt and redesigned for modern hardware, and the result is actually mind-bogglingly gorgeous. This isn't a visual filter, higher resolution and some sharpened textures like you might get in some remasters. I've seen Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled referred to as a HD Remaster, and while that's technically true like the re-releases of the Crash and Spyro games before it, that doesn't really do it justice. Arguably Naughty Dog's best title for the original PlayStation, this kart racer has it all: handling to rival Mario Kart, a distinct attitude and style to match Sonic's racing efforts and a fleshed-out single-player Adventure Mode that copies the structure of the excellent and now oft-forgotten Diddy Kong Racing. Once Activision suddenly rediscovered the popularity of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, the return of Crash Team Racing seemed pretty much inevitable. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug - but luckily, Crash Team Racing is as excellent a kart racing experience now as it was in the nineties.
